Super Mario: Keep your eye on 2014 draft prospect Mario Hezonja

I’ve recently watched this footage of a 1995 born Croatian named Mario Hezonja, expected to be a lottery pick in 2014:

Wow! This guy looks like a future star. Using my 33pt method rankings:

Physical tools: He looks to have an excellent combination of size/length and explosiveness. He doesn’t have the greatest vertical leap, but his first step and blow-by ability seems to be there. Together with excellent ball-handling signs,  I see the ability to attack the basket in the NBA in his future.

Skill: Hezonja is an extremely skilled young player. His jumpshot looks extremely smooth and effortless and his height allows him to have a high, difficult to guard release point. He looks comfortable creating shots for himself.

Feel for the Game: Another strength for Hezonja. He makes the game look extremely easy and natural for him and shows signs of superb court awareness.

From what I’ve seen so far, Mario Hezonja is what I would call a “3 tool” talent (carrying over the idea from the old 5 tool baseball phrase), looking like a plus player for his position in all 3 of physical impact, skill and feel for the game.  These players usually are all-stars to superstars. Now he has a long way to go – He has to prove he can attack the basket and finish consistently in the NBA, that his skill game and outside shooting can stand out for a SG/SF and that his feel really is just that good.  But I’m seeing all the tools in place for a possible future star and a prospect who can go toe to toe with Jabari Parker and Andrew Wiggins in the 2014 draft.
